Microsoft Surface Book Review: The Ultimate Laptop!

The ultimate Laptop! Microsoft Surface Book:

Are you wondering whether or not the lines of Microsoft Surface Books are worth their high price? Microsoft Surface BookWell, I would have to say Yes! And here in this article, I will go over why I think this. So if you’re ready, let’s get started.

They range from $1249.99 to a whopping $3,299.99 all depending on the CPU, amount of Ram, and the size of Solid State Drives. You can check out individual prices at the end of this article.

Are you ready to find out why you would want one?

So getting started this article is all about Microsoft’s Surface Book line of laptops, but before you start reading about why it is to be preferred over every competitor’s laptop ask yourself a question.

Would you be more likely to spend your hard earned money on a computer that its users depend on for up to the second analysis, consistent reliability, and used by a wide range of professionals such as doctors?

I would think the answer to the question would be a resounding “Yes!” But before you actually go out and buy the computer, you would want to have some evidence that all these things were true. That evidence is provided by none other than the NFL (National Football League) Yep you heard right.Microsoft Surface Book

They have contracted with Microsoft to use Microsoft’s Surface Book during game time on the sidelines. And if you look closely during a game you can actually see them in use.

For them the Surface Book does more than communicating with game video analysis – it is also used by team physicians to quickly retrieve player information and diagnose injuries in real time.

But why from Microsoft?

Many companies manufacture laptops but Microsoft has long been ahead of the game because it knows what users need for performance and speed. It knows because they have been developing the operating system known around the world as the preferred system to run both personal and business computers.

(Mac users will probably disagree, though. Ha-ha).

Now if you were buying a car, would you buy one from a company that only knew about the outside or one that actually has a detailed knowledge of how the car operates inside and out?  The other companies are great at making the outside but know nothing about the inner workings of a PC better than Microsoft.Microsoft Surface Book

The Surface Pro has two different processors to choose from – the Intel i5 and Intel i7. Anyone who has bought a PC over the last decade knows what a powerhouse the i7 processor is.

As for the i5, Microsoft has determined that is the minimum power and speed you need to own a laptop that is productive and easy to use.

This means that when you get your first Surface Book you will not have issues with performance or speed to run your essential and favorite programs, whether it is a word processor or a video game.

Microsoft isn’t Perfect!

There is a case to be made about some problems with the Windows operating system over the years, particularly with Windows 8. While Windows 8 was objectively a disaster (to say the least) compared to most other versions of Windows, Windows 10 has received excellent reviews and, wisely,

Microsoft named it Windows 10 instead of Windows 9 because they did not want its customers to think it was an improved Windows 8. (Who would have bought it then?)

Let’s check out the Graphics Processor Unit:

As important as the processor is, what many average buyers do not know about is the importance of what is called the GPU. The GPU is the graphics processing unit, the part of the CPU that does all the graphics work, everything from displaying text on your screen to the fast movement of players and objects in video games.Microsoft Surface Book

Microsoft has developed a separate GPU called a dGPU ( discrete GPU which is an NVIDIA GeForce based Graphics Processor Unit with 1 GB of Dedicated GDDR5 Ram).

This chip is really designed for power users and is a separate unit from the CPU (Central Processor Unit). This means that you are going to get higher performance, and faster display speeds when using graphics-intensive applications.

There is one drawback of the dGPU though, and that it is not available on the i5 Surface Book, which means you will have to spend a bit more for the i7 processor to get the advantages of dGPU.

But Microsoft knows that power users will more than likely move towards the i7 anyway, and so you may consider (or not) the dGPU as an added bonus for choosing the more expensive models.

How much Ram do you get?

Next in importance is the amount of RAM that is standard in its basic configuration. Again, Microsoft knows that the Surface Book needs to have at least 8 gigabytes to effectively run its laptop. You do not have to buy extra RAM to get optimal performance.

The RAM, also available in 16 gigabytes, combined with the Intel processor and dGPU guarantees a laptop that will get you up and be running, right out of the box.

The Display:

It comes with a 13.5-inch display with a PixelSense display that has an interactive interface you can draw and write on with a stylus. Because the 3000 x 2000 display is detachable, you have the best of a laptop and tablet in a single unit. Access to your computer is controlled by a biometric sensor.

The PixelSense display is a great idea, but for those who opt for the i7 power, the screen size seems just a bit smallish. I think a 15-inch standard size would be more practical, and you can find many PC manufacturers that will give i7 buyers the option of a 17-inch display.

Though this will cost you more, but, hey, why stop at a mere $1200.00, might as well go all out. LOL.Microsoft Surface Book

Hard Disk Storage:

Hard disk storage has become insanely cheap, and the Surface Book gives you standard options ranging from 128 gigabytes to 1 terabyte of hard disk storage so you can store all the pictures, videos, and documents you create.

You can choose an SSD (Solid State Drive) to greatly increase the speed of access and decrease the chances that your hard drive will fail. And after installing and using an SSD in my current desktop, I wouldn’t go with anything less.

Yeah, I know, once again more money, but if you like speed, (and who doesn’t) why not go the extra, after all, we didn’t start out looking for a cheap laptop, did we? 🙂

Battery Life:

Battery life is critical to any laptop users, and the Surface Book does not disappoint here either. It has a tested 16-hour battery life, enough to get you through a normal day – and then some. It is important to note that these 16 hours is with an i7 as well as an i5 processor, and people who have used them know how much power they use and how much heat they will generate.

We all need Accessories:

Accessories and flexibility are also critical to many users. Beyond the expected connections such as headphone jack and SD card reader.

It has two full-size USB 3.0 ports to connect external devices. It has multiple cameras: a 5.0-megapixel front facing camera with 1080p HD video quality and an 8.0-megapixel rear-facing camera with autofocus and 1080p HD video quality.

The Surface Book is IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n compatible with your network. And just what does that mean?  Well here’s what I found from  “They state that in 1997, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) created the first WLAN standard. So they called it 802.11 after the name of the group formed to oversee its development”. Microsoft Surface Book

It also comes with Bluetooth 4.0 LE (low energy) wireless technology for local or broadband access. Dolby stereo speakers complete the picture so you can enjoy your favorite videos online or offline.

Even though USB extenders are available, it seems two USB 3.0 ports is kind of measly. If you have an external backup drive connected and a printer, you run out of ports.

You can always set up a USB hub to plug everything in to take of that problem. At a  fairly cheap price, problem fixed :).

There are other accessories to be connected, including an external keyboard, a mouse, and a power source to charge up your mobile devices. Microsoft seems to still be holding on to the idea that people still want to own desktops, with a laptop as a second choice.

Care to check out some reviews?

Here is a link to Bestbuys reviews if you want to check them out yourself. From what I read I had a hard time finding any that had a negative experience with their Surface Books. In fact, after reading more than 15 reviews I only found a few that were below 5 stars and nothing below 4. Here are the most common statements I came across, Best Laptop, The best money can buy, Excellent performance, Awesome, and so on. So as you can see this is a well-loved product.

What I really think about the Microsoft Surface Book in a nutshell!

Whether you are an average home user or professional who depends daily on the speed and performance of a laptop computer and is willing to pay for it. I think you will find the Microsoft Surface Book has the hardware configuration you need to be productive right out of the box.

If you have popular Microsoft applications such as Word or Excel, you do not need to worry about compatibility issues. The Surface Book is modern hardware designed to integrate with a proven operating system – Windows – that has stood the test of time for consumers and businesses alike.

Personally, I can’t wait to save up money to get my hands on one these beauties! It may take me a little while because I will be going all out for the $3,299.99.

    Hi Kim,
thank you for your very thorough review on the Microsoft Surface. I didn’t know that they were this well equipped for its size. I have been a Mac user for many years and am considering crossing over to Microsoft. Do you know if they make a ruggedized version? I will be using mines in the field so I was just wondering about its durability. The price seems reasonable for all the features. Thanks again and I look forward to your response.

This is why I decided to call it the Ultimate laptop, not only is it built for top performance but is top in iit’s line of durability. I think that is why the NFL agreed to use the Surface book in the field, they needed something that would hold up under the rough conditions on the sidelines of the game. Look at all the time the coaches are caught up in the play.

They are built for excessive handling and I think will hold up fairly well with anything you can throw at it. Except for maybe drowning it or running it over with your car. lol

I hope this has helped, and should you have any other questions, let me know!

    Hello Kim,

Once you have the highest spec that costs $3,299.99, please share with us with your first experience with the Surface Book. I don’t really know much about computing digital as I just found out what GPU is, let alone the discreet one. So, the best spec which is the one you’ll get will have the dGPU inclusive?

    1. Kim (Post author)

Hello Tar, and thank you for stopping by! I wish I had the opportunity to get my hands on a Surface Book, but as of yet I have not, but will someday. From my experiences with computers and all that I have read up on the Surface Book, it is definitely worth the price. The discrete GPU will give you the best video experience and is included with models with the Intel Corei7 (CPU).

I hope this has helped, let me know if there is anything else I can do for you!

I like how informative your article is. I was looking to purchase a notebook for my home but was not too sure which 1 is the best. The Microsoft Surface Book looks pretty interesting as it has some good specifications and it isn’t that expensive as well. I would consider buying it soon. Thank You.

    1. Kim (Post author)

Hello Thevin, thank you for stopping by and I’m happy that you enjoyed the article. The Microsoft Surface book is comparable to many Laptops in price.

Though I think you are getting more from this one for your bucks. Now that is just my opinion and I could be a little biased when it comes to Microsoft. 🙂

Let me know if you need any help with anything else.

  4. John

A couple of years ago when I was shopping a laptop, the Surface was on my list. I opted for a laptop with a touch screen as my budget would not allow the Surface.
The details of the newer machines will make my decision much harder next time. You have given a great review of all of the details. I did play around with one at my local Best Buy store and I like what I seen. The fact of only two USB ports will be the biggest drawback to this machine. Many of the newer external drives will not work on the USB hubs.
Next time I go looking to replace my current laptop, the Surface will be higher on my list because of the speed and SSD drive.

    1. Kim (Post author)

Good to see you John, That is a drawback for the Surface Pro, but with the size of the SSD that you can get and the overall speed of the machine I think will compensate for it. I’m still planning on getting one for my self when I get the money saved. As far as Laptops go this one is hard to beat.
Glad you stopped by and hope to see you around.
