The best free software, according to me that is. 🙂 Yes there are hundreds and hundreds of free programs out there on the internet, but I thought I would share with you some of the more popular programs that you could use in your everyday computing, at home or at work.
Something you will want to keep in mind when downloading any programs off the internet will be to watch out for crapware (unwanted software bundles) or junk ware. These programs can open the door to malicious software that will change your browsers search criteria, allowing for a lot of pop-up adds to show up all over the place. (Most annoying)
And some can cause security issues down the road. (Defiantly a bad thing) 🙁 And a lot of them just screw everything up to the point of making you go bald from pulling your hair out. So to protect yourself when downloading any software, always check the custom install button. To check out any of these programs just copy and paste the name into your search engine and away you go.
Here is a program I came across the other day, this is a program that will let you pick your software from a list (which includes everything I list here and lots more). Once you have checked the boxes next to all the programs that you would like, you then click the install button and it will go through the process of loading and installing all of the ones you checked. And in the process it will do custom installs, eliminating the crapware for you. (How neat is that?)
One of the most important software to have on your computer will be your security software, you really don’t want to be surfing the web without it. So here are some that I run on my machines.
AVG Zen Antivirus:
This software has a free version which will block viruses, spyware, & other malware. It will also give you Email protection by warning you of malicious attachments before you open them. Now you can upgrade to a more secure antivirus for forty bucks a year, that will give you Online Shield (protects you from harmful downloads), Data Safe (encrypts & password-protect private files) More frequent Atuo-Udates (every two hours), not bad! I just use the free version along with my Norton Antivirus software.
This program will detect and remove malware like worms, Trojans, Root kits, rogues, spyware and more, all for free (Fantastic! ). 🙂 I run this a couple times a month just to make sure nothing was loaded onto my computer, and after downloading something that seemed to be a little fishy, I’ll run it right then.
You can also purchase the Premium version that will give you real time protection and a few other things, for twenty-five dollars a year.
This is a great program to use when you start getting annoying ads popping up everywhere when you’re surfing the internet. This program will remove any PUP/LPI (Potentially Undesirable Program), and those unwanted tool-bars that get added to your browsers. Even thou I consider myself to be pretty careful when visiting websites and such, I have had to use this program a time or two, and has always taken care of the problem.
Moving on to some utility programs:
Ever uninstalled a program and then said oh sh…, I didn’t want to do that. Well now you can just run this program to reinstall it, saving you the time in having to download and install it all over again. I know I have done this once or twice when I get in a hurry cleaning up my unused programs.
Now how many times have you gone into programs and features to uninstall a program that you don’t want anymore, and you get the message “cannot uninstall due to program still running”, or “program is being accessed by another program”. When in fact you know that you have closed it but have no idea what other program is accessing it. Well I have a few times, but now with this program once you have it installed all you have to do is right click on the file or program and select Unlocker, if the file is locked it will show a list of lockers, simply click unlock all and bam, they will uninstall.
Now where would we be without a cleaning program to clean up our messes of file history’s from our browsers and temporary junk files from other programs, and whatever else that gets stored on our computers from time to time that we don’t need? Well ccleaner is a great utility to clean out the ‘junk’ that accumulates over time, temporary files, broken shortcuts, and other problems that may occur overtime. I try to run this at least once a month or more depending on my activities on the computer. It is easy to use and free.
This is for those running windows 8 or 8.1, that would like the windows 7 start menu back. You can use this program to customize your start menu just like windows 7, or any combinations of menus from a drop down list. If you don’t like the changes you can always go back to the start and start over. This is a great program to use if you are not going to upgrade to windows 10
VLC Media Player:
Nothings more annoying than to pop in a DVD to watch a quick movie and the pre-installed player won’t play. Well this happened to me, so I spent some time looking on the internet, and came across this free media player program, I love it, it has played everything that I have thrown at it and best of all it’s free. Give it a try if you’re looking for a decent media player to replace whatever you have loaded on your system that doesn’t work worth a da…
Open Office and Libre Office:
Need an Office productivity suite, and you just don’t have the money to spend on Microsoft Office. I know it is a big chunk of change, so here are two great alternates to Microsoft office and their free. So go ahead and try them out and find out just how great they are, and who knows you may like them enough that you won’t be worrying about saving up to purchase Microsoft office.
Would you like to dabble in editing your photos and just don’t want to spend the bucks right now for the popular Photoshop, well then this is your next best program all because it’s free, and from the reviews I read on this it ranks up there pretty high. I don’t do that much photo editing myself but I think it out does Microsoft paint.
Dashlane, LastPass, or KeePass:
Got a lot of passwords you need to keep track of without having a special place that you have them written down, and you know anyone could find if they tried to. Well check out these password manager programs, they are supper easy and free, unless you want to upgrade to premium and get extra feature like encrypted file storage on their servers, so if your computer crashes (heavens forbid) and you lose your files, you will be able to retrieve them. I’m using Dashlane, and I like it quite well, all I have to remember is one master password and it takes care of logging into everywhere I need to go.
Let’s say that your thinking about upgrading your system, like you want to add more memory to help your system to run faster, but you don’t know what memory to get to match what is inside your system. Well this utility, when you run it, it will give you a list of all your hardware along with make and model, and a boat load of other information. This will help you know what you will need, to upgrade your computer, and it also tells you the temperature of the CPU, Graphics, and storage devices. This way if it is running too hot you will know that you should install another case fan. It’s always a good idea to keep the hardware around 56C.
I know it is not a program you will use on a regular bases, but I found it to be fun to run from time to time just to see how hot I’m running (my computer that is,) 🙂
I don’t know about you but after some time I find out that I have duplicate photos and documents on my hard drive, how they get there is anybody’s guess, maybe because I run different photo apps and they tend to make their own folders. Well it just clutters up my file system, so I went online and tried out several programs and this is the one I went back to. It gives you total control over which files or folders you want to keep and which ones to delete. I was quite surprised to find that photos and docs weren’t the only ones getting duplicated, so I am planning on running this program a few times a year now, just to keep the clutter out and my system.
The Best Free Software:
This has been just a short list of free programs that are out there, there are hundreds maybe thousands of them just waiting to be downloaded to your computer.XXXX You will just want to keep in mind to always check the custom install button, to prevent any unwanted crapware.
One more thing, I know there are a lot of browsers out there, and I was just wondering what everyone’s favorite browser is.
My favorite is Google Chrome, why? Probable because I have used it since the first day it came out, and I know my way around it.
So which one is your favorite, and why do you like it? If you would like to share with us you can do so at the bottom of this post.
I hope you have enjoyed this and if you have some other software you would like to share with the rest of us please do so in the comment section below, I would love to hear from you, and thanks for stopping by. 🙂
